Katuna (Gatuna) Border Uganda–Rwanda – Trade & Tourist Gateway

Katuna (Gatuna) Border Uganda–Rwanda - Trade & Tourist Gateway

Katuna border, also called Gatuna border, is located in Kabale District in southwestern Uganda. It connects Uganda and Rwanda and is mainly used for Rwanda’s exports and imports.

Katuna border is about 500 km from Kampala by road and operates 24 hours a day to support trade between the two countries. Originally, the border was managed by Belgium and Rwanda, but in 1996 the British government demarcated it. Based on an agreement between the Belgians and the British, the border became part of Uganda.

The area around Katuna is home to people of different nationalities, including Congolese, Burundians, Rwandans, and Ugandans such as the Bakiga. Katuna town itself has a population of about 1,300 people, most of whom earn their livelihood from activities around the border.

The steep slopes around the border make construction of accommodation facilities difficult and expensive. However, the border still serves as a gateway for tourists traveling from Rwanda to Uganda. Popular nearby attractions include Lake Bunyonyi, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and Mgahinga National Park.

Immigration Services at Katuna Border

Both Uganda and Rwanda have immigration offices at Katuna border. These offices handle visa issuance for international tourists who are not East African citizens and also verify travel documents. Tourists entering Uganda or Rwanda through this border can apply for a visa at the immigration offices after paying the required fees.
