GORILLA TREKKING IN BUHOMA SECTOR OF BWINDI

Set on an altitude of 1500km above sea level lies Buhoma sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park an exceptional region featuring the oldest trailhead in Uganda pioneering gorilla trekking , this sector was as well the first shade to host gorilla trekkers when Mubare gorilla family was opened for tracking in 1993 and for eleven years surprisingly it remained the only trailhead for gorilla tracking in Bwindi impenetrable forest and despite the introduction of more trailheads Buhoma remains the most popular location for gorilla trekking activity and most fast booked destination.

Buhoma is the leading host of amazing tourism activities credited with three of the twelve bwindi’s habituated families or groups and some of these includes Mubare gorilla group which is one of the ancient gorilla groups that were habituated in 1991 and came to be trekked by visitors in 1993 , this group derived its name from the most magnificent hills .In 2013 Mubare group was joined by other four gorillas that lead to increase of the number to nine family members including one silverback , black back , one adult female and juveniles. Back in the days the gorillas used to reside near Buhoma headquarters making them easy to trek but now they extended to further areas taking around five hours for visitors to trace them and going to Habinyanja gorilla family which has been visited by a thousand over the past years with tracking taking tourists the entire day requiring one to have a lunch box , bottled water and some snacks commonly prepared by your booked accommodation especially the midrange and luxury accommodations .This group contains of eighteen members with mainly two silverbucks though these figures keep changing due to the newly born babies , another group is Rushegura gorilla family composed of 21 members summing up one silverbuck , blackback , five adult females , two sub adults , six juveniles and six infants.This group was first habituated in 2000 for gorilla tracking and in 2002 it received its first tourists and note that trekking this group takes less time as the members leave near the park headquarters though  however the mountain gorillas in this group tend to move as far as outside Bwindi park boundary .Some of accommodations you can rest from range from humble , midrange to luxury which includes Buhoma lodge , Magohany springs , Sanctuary Gorilla Camp , Silverback lodge , Buhoma community Rest Camp , Engagi lodge , Huhoma haven lodge , Bwindi lodge to mention but a few.
