The park shares its boundary with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is also home to several of the Virunga Volcanoes and forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area.

This short gorilla safari is ideal for travelers who do not want to drive long distances to see gorillas in the wild. The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes only about 2 hours, making it very convenient compared to other gorilla destinations. Below is the detailed itinerary.

Detailed 2-Day Rwanda Gorilla Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze

After breakfast at your hotel in Kigali, or shortly after your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet your driver-guide to begin the journey.

Depending on your pickup time, you may choose to do a short city tour in Kigali before driving to Volcanoes National Park. On arrival in Musanze, check in at your lodge and relax as you prepare for the gorilla trekking adventure the next day. Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Departure

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing about the rules and guidelines of gorilla trekking. You will then be assigned a gorilla family and set off into the forest with your ranger guides.

The trek can last between 2 and 8 hours depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you will spend one full hour observing their behavior and taking photos.

After the trek, return to the starting point to receive your gorilla trekking certificate. You will then drive back to Kigali, where you will be dropped at your hotel or at Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
