Bwindi Four Sectors Compared for Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi’s Four Sectors Compared – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a large forest area in Uganda. It covers the districts of Rubanda, Kisoro, Kanungu, and Kabale. The park supports about 24 habituated mountain gorilla families. These gorillas are found in four main sectors which are Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Ruhija. Each sector offers a different gorilla trekking experience.

Buhoma Sector

Buhoma sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi. It is the oldest and most popular starting point for gorilla trekking. It hosts the first habituated gorilla family known as Mubare. Over time, more gorilla families have been added to this sector.

Buhoma also offers nature walks and birding experiences. Visitors can explore trails such as Munyanga River, Ivy River, Muzabajiro, and Rushura Hill. Accommodation options in Buhoma range from budget to luxury. These include Bwindi Volcano Lodge, Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs Lodge, and Bwindi Forest Lodge.

Rushaga Sector

Rushaga sector has the highest number of gorilla families in Bwindi. It hosts about eight groups, making it one of the best places for gorilla trekking. Some of the gorilla groups here include Bikingi, Mishaya, Nshongi, Mucunguzi, Bweza, Rwigyi, and Kutu.

Rushaga is also the only sector where gorilla habituation is done in Uganda. The cost for this experience is USD 1500 per person. Accommodation in this area includes Gorilla Valley Lodge, Four Gorillas Lodge, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Mutanda Lake Resort, Rushaga Gorilla Camp, and Bwindi Jungle Lodge.

Nkuringo Sector

Nkuringo sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi. It is known for its steep trails, which require more effort during trekking. The best time to visit Nkuringo is during the dry season when trails are easier to walk on. However, rain can occur at any time.

Gorilla families in Nkuringo include Nkuringo, Bushaho, Christmas, and Posho. Accommodation options include Nshongi Camp, Karungi Camp, Mutanda Eco Community Center, Bwindi Backpackers Lodge, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, Virunga Campsite, Nkuringo Guest House, and Lake Mulehe Gorilla Lodge.

Ruhija Sector

Ruhija sector is another area for gorilla trekking in Bwindi. It is known for both gorillas and bird life. Visitors may also see other animals such as small mammals and reptiles. Ruhija offers a quiet trekking experience compared to other sectors.

What to Pack for Bwindi

When visiting Bwindi, it is important to pack the right items. These include insect repellent, a waterproof jacket, hiking boots, gloves, long trousers, gaiters, and long sleeved shirts. These items help you stay comfortable during the trek.
