Eastern Lowland Gorilla – Facts, Habitat & Conservation

Eastern Lowland Gorilla - Facts, Habitat & Conservation

According to research and regular gorilla censuses, the Eastern Lowland Gorilla, also known as Grauer’s Gorilla, is the largest of the four gorilla subspecies. They are closely related to the mountain gorillas.

Eastern Lowland Gorillas spend most of their time on the ground. They feed on herbs, fruits, bamboo, vines, insects, tree bark, and leaves. They are generally peaceful and only become aggressive when they sense danger. Within their families, they live in harmony.

With continued conservation efforts and cooperation between governments and organizations, there is hope that gorilla populations will grow and that these endangered species will survive for future generations.

Gorillas are gentle primates that share about 98.3% of their DNA with humans, making them some of our closest relatives. They are stocky animals with broad shoulders and small eyes.

Over the years, gorillas have faced serious threats from human activities such as deforestation, poaching, and hunting. These actions have pushed them close to extinction. Today, they are listed as endangered species, with only about 6,800 individuals left in the wild.

Gorillas are found in only three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These countries, together with local and international organizations such as the International Gorilla Conservation Programme, Uganda Wildlife Authority, and Rwanda Development Board, are working hard to protect gorillas for future generations.

Gorillas live in families or groups that usually have between 5 and 40 members. Each group is led by a dominant silverback male, who protects the family and mates with the females. Female gorillas give birth once every 4 to 6 years, usually to a single infant and rarely to twins. In her lifetime, a female may only produce 3 to 4 babies, which makes the population growth very slow.
