Cyanika Border Uganda–Rwanda – Gateway Border Crossing

Cyanika border is located in southwestern Uganda and connects Uganda with Rwanda. It is found in Kisoro District, making it a convenient entry point for tourists visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, as well as Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. These parks are famous for gorilla trekking.
Cyanika border is one of the most important gateways for tourists traveling between Uganda and Rwanda, even more used than Katuna border.
Requirements for Crossing the Border
Crossing at Cyanika is simple if travelers have the right documents:
- Valid passport: International travelers must present a passport, while East Africans can use a valid national ID.
- Valid visa: International tourists need a valid East African visa, which allows them to visit Uganda, Rwanda, and other East African countries.
The Cyanika border operates till 9pm Rwandan time and opens at 6am daily.
People living around the border include Ugandans, Rwandans, Congolese, and Burundians. The largest groups are the Bafumbira and Bakiga from Uganda.
Tourist Attractions Around Cyanika Border
- Mountain gorillas: Tourists can see mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi has more than 20 gorilla families spread across Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo sectors. Mgahinga has one gorilla family available for trekking. A gorilla permit costs USD 800 per person.
- Lake Mutanda: Lake Mutanda is about one and a half hours’ drive from Cyanika border. Visitors can enjoy canoe rides and bird watching, making it a relaxing stopover.
- Golden Monkeys: Golden monkey trekking takes place in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The activity lasts between 2 to 5 hours, giving tourists the chance to watch these playful primates in their natural home.
