Detailed 7-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your safari guide. After a short briefing about your 7-day trip, you will be transferred to your hotel in Kigali for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Kigali City Tour & Transfer to Akagera National Park
After breakfast, enjoy a city tour of Kigali. Visit the Genocide Memorial Center, local markets, and other sites that give you insight into Rwanda’s past and present.
Later, drive east to Akagera National Park. After registration at the park headquarters, go for a boat ride on Lake Ihema. Here you may see crocodiles, hippos, elephants, and several bird species. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 3: Game Drive & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Start the day with a game drive in Akagera, looking out for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, rhinos, crocodiles, and many bird species.
In the afternoon, drive to Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi, arriving in the evening. Check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking & Cultural Visit
After breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for briefing and registration. With the help of park rangers, trek to find a gorilla family. Trekking can take 2–6 hours, depending on their movement. You will spend 1 hour with the gorillas, observing and taking photos.
Return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, visit the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village. Learn about traditional Rwandan life, including farming, food preparation, weddings, and cultural performances.
Day 5: Visit Lake Kivu & Transfer to Nyungwe Forest
After a late breakfast, drive to Nyungwe National Park, passing by Lake Kivu in Gisenyi. Enjoy the lakeside scenery and activities such as boat rides, canoeing, or short community visits. Have lunch at a lakeside resort, then continue to Nyungwe Forest. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk
After breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before chimpanzee trekking. Along the trek, you may also see other primates such as colobus monkeys, mangabeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys, as well as birds and butterflies.
Return to the lodge for lunch and rest. In the afternoon, drive to Uwinka Visitor Center for the canopy walk, the only one in East Africa. The suspended bridge offers amazing forest views and chances to see birds and primates.
Day 7: Return to Kigali & Departure
After breakfast, check out and begin the drive back to Kigali. Stop in Butare to visit the Ethnographic Museum, the largest in Rwanda, showcasing the country’s history and traditions.
Have lunch in Butare, then continue to Kigali. You will be dropped at the airport for your flight, marking the end of your 7 Days Rwanda Family Safari.
