Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Double Trekking Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up from Kigali, city tour & transfer to Volcanoes National Park
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, meet our driver guide for a briefing about your safari. Depending on your arrival time, you may first take a Kigali city tour, visiting the Genocide Memorial Center, the Presidential Palace Museum, and craft markets.
Afterward, drive northwest to Volcanoes National Park, home to a large population of mountain gorillas. Check into your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: First gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, drive to Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules and regulations. This session takes about 30 minutes, and you can ask questions before heading out.
You will be assigned to a group of 8 people, each trekking a specific gorilla family. Treks usually begin at 8:00 a.m. and can last up to 6 hours depending on terrain, your hiking speed, and where the gorillas are located.
When you find them, you will spend 1 hour observing their behavior, body language, and interactions. Take photos before returning to your lodge for rest. In the evening, you may visit the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo or relax at the lodge.
Day 3: Second gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, return to Kinigi headquarters for another briefing. This day, you will trek a different gorilla family from the one you visited earlier.
Spend another hour with the gorillas, watching them care for their young, communicate, and feed. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, visit Iby’Iwachu Cultural Village (Gorilla Guardians Village) for an insight into Rwandan traditions, music, and lifestyle. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 4: Dian Fossey tomb hike & transfer back to Kigali
After breakfast, take a trek to Karisoke Research Station to visit the Dian Fossey tomb site. Dian Fossey is remembered for her work in protecting mountain gorillas and setting up a research center in Rwanda.
After the visit, drive back to Kigali to catch your flight or check into your hotel.
