A 3-day Akagera wildlife safari is a good choice for travelers who want to explore wildlife in Rwanda. Akagera National Park is the only Savannah park in the country, and it is home to all the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, cape buffaloes, and rhinos.

The park also hosts many other wildlife species, which you can see during game drives. On this safari, you will focus on spotting the Big Five in the northern sector of the park and enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Below is the detailed itinerary.

Detailed 3-Day Akagera Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park & Afternoon Boat Safari

After breakfast, depart for Akagera National Park in Rwanda’s Eastern Province. The drive from Kigali takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. On arrival, your guide will clear with the park rangers before taking you to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, go for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, one of the best places in Rwanda for boat safaris. While on the lake, you will see hippos, crocodiles, water birds, and animals that gather at the banks to drink. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive

After breakfast, set out with packed lunch for a full-day game drive in the northern sector of the park, where wildlife is most concentrated. Along the way, you will also see small lakes and herds of animals.

In the north, you can expect to see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, topi, zebras, impalas, and many other species. Akagera is also excellent for birding, and you will spot a variety of birds during the drive.

The game drive may last up to six hours, with a picnic lunch included. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive & Departure

After breakfast, take one last game drive before leaving the park. Later, drive back to Kigali, marking the end of your 3-day Akagera wildlife safari.
