6-Day Bwindi & Nyungwe Safari from Kigali – Gorillas, Chimps & Culture

This 6-day safari takes you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda to see the mountain gorillas and to Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda for chimpanzee trekking. Bwindi is one of the last strongholds of mountain gorillas, while Nyungwe is home to chimpanzees and other primates. The tour begins and ends in Kigali, Rwanda.

Detailed 6-Day Bwindi Gorillas & Rwanda Chimps Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet your driver-guide for a short briefing about the safari. Depending on your arrival time, you may tour Kigali before driving south to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Lunch will be along the way. On arrival, check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk
After an early breakfast, you will go to the park headquarters for a briefing about chimpanzee trekking. With the help of rangers and trackers, you will walk through the forest in search of chimpanzees. Once you find them, you will spend one hour observing them as they feed, play, and care for their young.
After lunch at your lodge, you will go for a canopy walk in the afternoon. This suspended bridge stretches over 160 meters and gives you an aerial view of the forest while listening to the sounds of birds and primates. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Transfer to Musanze/Ruhengeri
After breakfast, you will check out and transfer to Musanze, arriving around midday. Check in at your hotel, have lunch, and spend the afternoon relaxing. Dinner and overnight will be in Musanze.
Day 4: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, you will begin the drive to Uganda, crossing into the country through the Katuna border. Continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where you will check in at your lodge for lunch. The afternoon will be at leisure to rest and prepare for gorilla trekking the next day. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking & Batwa Cultural Visit
After breakfast, you will head to the park offices for a briefing about gorilla trekking. Visitors are divided into groups of eight, and each group is assigned a gorilla family. Guided by rangers, you will trek through the forest until you find the gorillas. Once located, you will spend one full hour with them before returning to the starting point.
In the afternoon, you will visit the Batwa community. The Batwa were the original forest dwellers of Bwindi, and during this tour you will learn about their traditions, listen to their stories, and enjoy cultural performances. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Return to Kigali & Departure
After breakfast, you will check out and drive back to Kigali through the Gatuna border. On arrival, you may have lunch in the city before being transferred to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight. This marks the end of your 6-day Bwindi and Nyungwe safari.
