Detailed 6-Day Bwindi Gorillas & Rwanda Wildlife Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Pick Up & Kigali City Tour

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet your driver-guide for a briefing about the safari. You will then start with a Kigali city tour to learn about the history and culture of Rwanda.

Visit the Genocide Memorial, local markets, museums, and art centers, each offering its own story. Dinner and overnight will be at your hotel in Kigali.

Day 2: Drive to Akagera National Park & Boat Trip on Lake Ihema

After breakfast, you will drive to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only Savannah park. On arrival, check in at your lodge and relax before lunch.

In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Here you may see hippos cooling in the water, crocodiles along the shores, and elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, giraffes, and zebras coming to drink. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive in Akagera

After breakfast, you will set out for a morning game drive. Akagera is home to the Big Five; lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffaloes, as well as other wildlife like zebras, giraffes, antelopes, waterbucks, jackals, and hyenas. The game drive continues again in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in Kigali.

Day 4: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After breakfast, you will drive to Uganda through the Katuna border. Continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorillas.

Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch, with views of the forest and sounds of birds around you. Spend the afternoon relaxing as you prepare for the next day’s gorilla trekking. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking & Batwa Community Visit

After breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla trekking. Visitors are grouped into teams of eight, each assigned a gorilla family and led by ranger guides. The trek can take several hours, depending on where the gorillas are located.

Once you find them, you will spend one full hour watching them as they feed, play, and move under the silverback’s protection. Take photos and videos before returning to the starting point. Go back to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will visit the Batwa community. The Batwa were the original forest dwellers of Bwindi, living as hunters and gatherers. During this cultural tour, you will learn about their traditions, listen to their stories, and enjoy their music and dances. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Departure

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and drive back to Kigali through the Gatuna border. On arrival in the city, you may have lunch before being transferred to the airport for your departure flight. This marks the end of your 6-day Bwindi and Akagera safari.
