Detailed Luxury Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park Rwanda
Upon arrival at the airport for your 9 Days Rwanda Gorilla Holiday, meet and be welcomed by the guide/driver and transfer to Akagera National Park which is composed of wetlands, woodlands and Savannah with the lowest point of Rwanda.
Lunch and after take an evening photographic game drive to spot some of the African Big 5 mammals and other wildlife species in Rwanda like Giraffes, Buffaloes, Elephants and a lot of bird species like the shoe bill stork which can be seen easily on the shorelines on River Kagera.
Day 2: Game safari and Lake Ihema boat cruise
Dawn game drive to search for early risers and also animals you might have missed in the previous day’s photographic game drive. Return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon go for the boat ride on Lak Ihema – which is Rwanda’s second largest lake.
To the nearby wetlands and shorelines will expose you to water loving birds and animal species that come along to quench their thirst. Dinner and overnight stay at any of Akagera’s luxurious lodge.
Day 3: Transfer from Akagera NP to Volcanoes National Park
After morning breakfast, take scenic drive to Volcanoes national park with stopovers at some communities and scenic places for photography and lunch enroute. Reach Volcanoes national park in the evening and relax at your lodge as you wait for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Volcanoes NP- Gorilla Tracking and visiting the twin lakes
An early breakfast, and with your packed lunch drive from the lodge to Volcanoes’ park offices for briefing and after 30 minutes, you will then start your trek to search for mountain gorillas.
After 2 – 3 hours, prepare yourself for the joyful Rwanda gorilla trekking encounter with these beautiful creatures and wonderful experience.
After finding them, a one – on – one encounter with your allocated family will last for 1 hour and then trek back to your lodge for lunch and in the afternoon, visit the twin lakes; Ruhondo and Bulera.
Day 5: Dian Fossey Grave Hike/Karisoke Research Station
Visit the Dian Fossey grave at Karisoke research Centre after breakfast at the lodge. This is where she spent years researching and conserving the gorillas before she was killed and buried here. next to Digit, a silverback gorilla she dearly loved.
Learn about her works in the entire Virunga region concerning mountain gorilla conservation. On return, have lunch and transfer to Lake Kivu, relax at the beach, dinner and overnight a resort on the lake shores.
Day 6: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Have a relaxed morning breakfast, visit the Napoleon islands or just take a speed boat cruise to explore various islands on the lake and fishermen casting their nets.
Visit the environmental museum, communities and depart southwards to Nyungwe forest National park. Reach Nyungwe forest in the evening for dinner and overnight stay at any of the lodges.
Day 7: Chimpanzee tracking & Canopy walk
Have breakfast, and head to the Park headquarters for chimpanzee trekking and the forest briefing. Here the forest ranger will tell you about dos and don’ts while trekking the mountain gorillas. Head for chimpanzee trekking in the forest thereafter.
The time taken to find a Chimp troop is unpredictable but usually takes from 2 to 8 hours.
On the way, you will come across other primate species found in this park such as the Owl faced monkeys, Silver monkeys, Ruwenzori Columbus, L’hoest’s monkeys and the Grey Cheeked Mangabeys and so many other primates and birds.
In the afternoon, take on the adventurous canopy walk searching for more primates, birds and scenic view of the forest canopies and vast flora.
Day 8: Community & Forest / Nature walks
After breakfast, go for an amazing Nyungwe forest walk and during this excursion you can still meet a number of primates, birds and view abundant species of plants with a closer view of entire Nyungwe forest.
It takes you to view the water falls, as well as the amazing forest cover. Then spend the evening taking another community walk in the periphery of Nyungwe forest and to the tea plantations and tea factory in Gisakura.
Day 9: Return to Kigali. Departure
Have breakfast, and immediately set off to Kigali, via Nyanza for a tour in the Rwanda National museum and to Butare for lunch and a cultural excursion. Proceed to Kigali and dropped at the airport for your departure flight, bringing this 9 days’ Rwanda trip to an end.
