Detailed Rwanda Students Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park and Boat cruise
Depending on your arrival in Kigali international airport for your 8 Days Classic Rwanda Safari, have a warm welcome and briefing by our company representative who will be your driver guide for the entire safari.
After short relaxation and snacks, you will transfer to Akagera national park – an eastern based national park taking a distance of 2-3 hours’ drive via the fascinating landscapes of Rwanda.
Arrive at Akagera national park, have lunch and connect for your afternoon activity-boat cruise along Lake Ihema with an opportunity to explore the lake and its habitants like the hippos, crocodiles and different bird species. Return to your lodge to unwind in the wild, you will also have dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Game drive in Akagera NP and return to Kigali
Early in the morning after breakfast, you will go for a Northern circuit game drive to search for early risers and look out for animals such as Leopards, elephants, giraffes, Lions, Rhinos, buffaloes, zebras and many more lesser mammals like Antelopes.
This takes 3-4 hours as you enjoy the beauty of the park. After the game drive, depart the park connecting to back to Kigali, have lunch at a hotel, brief city tour where you visit the Rwanda genocide memorial center, former president’s home, and much more and connect to your hotel for a comfortable rest, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe national park and canopy walk
On this day, you will have an early breakfast then embark on a journey to southwestern based Nyungwe forest national park. En-route, visit the Rwanda National Museum in Nyanza and also pass by the Nyanza cultural village where the African culture is witnessed.
Estimated distance is 6 hours’ drive with lunch en-route, preferably in Butare city. Connect directly for a canopy walk where you will spot a number of primates jumping from one tree to another.
This is 50 meters above the Nyungwe forest. Before night fall, drive to your hotel for relaxation.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking
Enjoy early breakfast and drive to the headquarters for briefing about the endangered chimpanzees before penetrating the forest in search of the active and playful fellows in Nyungwe forest.
Chimpanzees are much easier to spot as they jump from one tree to another, chattering and laughing. Rwanda chimpanzee trekking usually takes about 3 hours.
On finding them, spend an hour while taking photos and videos. You will then return to your lodge and spend the evening at leisure or take a leisurely with in the village or visit Gisakura Tea factory.
Day 5: Transfer to Lake Kivu
After breakfast, connect to Lake Kivu in Rubavu town where you will spend an entire afternoon enjoying the breeze from Rwanda’s biggest lake and relaxing at the lake shores and white sand beaches. Estimated distance is 6 hours with lunch enroute.
Day 6: Canoeing and transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast at leisure, explore more of the lake visiting the islands on a dugout canoe or local boats, visit Gisenyi town where you will have lunch and then connect for 2 hours to Volcanoes national park.
Volcanoes national park is well known for its rare mountain gorillas. Upon arrival in the afternoon, proceed to your reserved lodge to rest and prepare for the next day’s adventure of finding mountain gorillas on the slopes of Virunga mountains.
Day 7: Gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park
You will be transferred to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing about the endangered mountain gorillas from the head ranger.
Along with your gorilla trekking gear, drinking water and packed lunch, the driver will drop you off at the starting point to trek the gorillas together with the armed ranger guides.
This gorilla trekking activity may take between 2-6 hours depending on the gorilla movements and speed for the trekkers.
However, meeting them is so rewarding and you will spend maximum of an hour with them as you take time studying them and taking pictures and videos.
After spending remarkable time with the interesting beautiful creatures, return to the base, meet with your driver and connect to your lodge for lunch and afternoon relaxation.
Day 8: Transfer back to Rwanda
After breakfast, transfer back to Kigali via the scenic rolling hills of Rwanda. Be dropped off at Kigali airport to catch up your flight back home. End of the safari.
