Detailed Primates in Rwanda Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Our company representative will be waiting to happily welcome you for your 5 Days Rwanda Primates Safari upon arrival at Kigali airport.

You will later be taken on a city excursion around Kigali so that you are oriented about this great country with a thousand hills, plus visiting some of its iconic features, ranging from museums, genocide memorial sites, food, people and craft markets.

After this excursion, immediately transfer to Nyungwe for relaxation, via the mesmerizing Butare city.

Day 2: Nyungwe forest – Chimp tracking and Canopy walk adventure

After breakfast on this second day of your 5 Days Rwanda Primates Safari, you will transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park for briefing which lasts for about 30 minutes.

After, head to the forest to search for the allocated chimpanzee troops. Nyungwe Forest chimpanzees are semi habituated and therefore trekkers are reminded required to wake up early to have chances of spotting them before they roam to the furthest points of the jungle.

Nyungwe is a home of 13 different species of primates therefore, you will a chance to spot other animals other than chimpanzees such as Vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, colobus monkeys and more.

In the afternoon, head for the adventurous canopy walk which involves walking from one end of the forest to another viewing birds, other species of primates, vast Nyungwe flora, butterflies, etc. Return to the lodge for overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park Rwanda

After your breakfast, leave Nyungwe Forest and head towards the Volcanoes National Park. While on this road trip, you will have a glance upon the beautiful scenery of Congo-Nile trail and the towering Virunga rages. Reach Volcanoes NP later in the afternoon for overnight at your lodge.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Have an early morning breakfast and head to Kinigi at the park headquarters for briefing. This briefing helps you to know the dos and don’ts while trekking these habituated gorillas and it takes only 30 minutes.

You will be divided into groups of 8 people to trek different gorilla families, each led by an experienced armed park ranger and enter the jungle in search for these beautiful apes.

You will have an hour to spend with them as you take photographs / videos and learning extensively about their lives, history and family composition.

Time for Rwanda gorilla trekking depends on the movements of these apes, weather and as well your fitness but it takes between 2 and 8 hours.

You will trek back for your picnic lunch and later hike to Karisoke station and visit the Dian Fossey graveyard and her beloved gorillas which were poached and buried close to her grave.

Dian Fossey is an American researcher who dedicated her life to save these great mountain gorillas. In the evening return to the lodge for your dinner and slumber.

Day 5: Transfer to Kigali city

After breakfast, you will transfer back to Kigali for your international flight out of Kigali and this will be the end of your 5 days’ safari in Rwanda.
