Detailed Rwanda Gorillas & Wildlife Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Pick up from the Kigali airport and transfer to Akagera national park

Meet and greet our tour guide at the Kigali airport upon arrival for your 5 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Wildlife Safari, who later takes you through a brief summary of your Rwanda safari tour. The tour guide will thereafter transfer you to Rwanda’s Eastern based Akagera National Park.

On arrival at the park, depending on time you will do an afternoon game drive through the park. On the drive you may see various wild animals that include Giraffes, Buffaloes, Spotted Hyenas, Elephants, and plenty of bird life.

Dinner and overnight at either Dereva Hotel for budget /Akagera Game Lodge for mid-market or Magasha Tented Lodge.

Day 2: Game drive and afternoon boat ride on Lake Ihema

Take an early breakfast and then embark on a morning game drive where you may spot various wild animals including the early risers as well as nocturnal animals like hyenas, lions, leopards and also buffalos, elephants and more.

After the safari drive, return to the lodge for lunch and thereafter go for a boat ride on Lake Ihema.

During the boat cruise, you will spot various water animals most especially the hippos which are mostly spotted on a recreation point known as Rwanda school of hippos and crocodiles.

You will also be able to see other water based animals as well as land animals that come for a drink at the cool waters.

There are also different bird species which can be seen at the shores of this lake. Retreat to your lodge and spend a relaxed evening.

Day 3: Travel to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast the driver guide will transfer you to Ruhengeri in Northern Rwanda. This is the region where Volcanoes National Park, home to the mountain gorillas lies.

Check into your lodge. You can take a local community tour as you experience the life of the indigenous people and learn about their current lifestyles and rich history.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast on this fourth day of your 5 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Wildlife Safari, our guide will drive you to the park headquarters in Kinigi where you will meet the ranger guides.

Attend the briefing about Rwanda gorilla trekking habits, regulations, guidelines and then begin your hike into the forest and search for the endangered mountain Gorillas.

You need to know that you will be divided into small groups of eight members and each assigned to trek one gorilla family. Trekking can be quite tough and therefore you are required to be energetic and ready to hike for some good time.

Most treks range from approximately 2 to 7 hours depending on where you find the allocated gorilla family. You have up to 1 hour to watch them in the wild as they play, feed, or even groom.

After this personal encounter with the gorillas, return to the lodge for lunch and prepare for the next day departure.

Day 5: Transfer to Kigali City Tour

Have breakfast and drive to Kigali via the genocide memorial site, other cultural sites and the craft center for souvenir shopping. Have lunch and transfer to the airport for your departure flight.

This will mark the end of your 5 days’ safari in volcanoes and Akagera national parks.
